Baku, the capital, is barely three hours by direct flight from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, yet it feels like a completely different world: a UNESCO-listed walled old city sitting beneath glass skyscrapers, a Caspian Sea promenade, and, an hour or two out of town, green mountains, ancient fire temples and bubbling mud volcanoes. It is affordable, walkable, Muslim-friendly and endlessly photogenic - a genuine all-rounder for a long weekend or a full week.

Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the visa's expiry, with two blank pages.

Where to Go in Azerbaijan
Baku - The Capital (3-4 Nights)
Baku is a study in contrasts. Icherisheher, the walled Old City, is a UNESCO World Heritage site of narrow stone lanes, the 12th-century Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Step outside the walls and you are among grand boulevards, the seaside Baku Boulevard along the Caspian, and the three sail-shaped Flame Towers that light up the skyline at night. Don't miss the Heydar Aliyev Center - Zaha Hadid's flowing white masterpiece - and the cafes and fountains of pedestrianised Fountain Square.
Absheron Peninsula - Fire and Flames
Azerbaijan is the "Land of Fire," and the day trips around Baku show you why. Ateshgah, the Fire Temple, is a centuries-old place of worship built around a natural gas flame. Nearby Yanardag is a hillside that has been burning continuously for centuries. Both are easy half-day excursions from the city and pair well with the Gobustan reserve.
Gobustan - Petroglyphs and Mud Volcanoes
About an hour south of Baku, the Gobustan National Park protects thousands of prehistoric rock carvings dating back up to 40,000 years - another UNESCO site. A short, bumpy drive away is one of the world's largest concentrations of mud volcanoes: strange, cold, bubbling cones you can walk right up to. It is one of the most unusual half-days in the region.
Gabala & Sheki - The Mountains (2-3 Nights)
For green mountains, waterfalls and cooler air, head north-west to Gabala - a resort area with cable cars, lakes and a ski centre - and the historic silk-road town of Sheki, famous for its ornate Khan's Palace and its sweet halva. This is where families and summer travellers escape the Caspian heat.
