Packing for Umrah is different from packing for any other trip. Once you enter the state of Ihram, a set of rules governs what you can wear and use - so a small oversight, like a scented deodorant, can cause real stress at the airport or on the way to the Meeqat. This checklist is written for pilgrims travelling from the UAE, whether you are flying from Abu Dhabi, Dubai or Sharjah, and it covers everything from documents to Ihram garments to the little comforts that make long days at the Haram easier.
Pack light, pack smart
Most UAE airlines give generous baggage on Jeddah and Madinah routes, but you will do a lot of walking and carrying. Aim for one medium checked bag and a small backpack you can take into the Haram. You can buy almost anything you forget in Makkah or Madinah - so prioritise the items that are hard to replace or governed by Ihram rules.
Essential Documents to Carry
Your documents are the one category you cannot afford to get wrong. Keep originals and printed copies in your cabin bag - never in checked luggage - and save digital copies to your phone and email as a backup.
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates
- Umrah visa or permit (booked through the official Nusuk platform or an approved agent)
- Emirates ID and a copy of your UAE residence visa
- Meningitis ACWY vaccination certificate (mandatory - see note below)
- Printed and digital copies of your flight and hotel confirmations
- Passport-size photographs (a few spare, white background)
- A debit/credit card plus some Saudi riyals in cash for small purchases
Verify current health and visa rules
The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is generally required and must usually be taken at least 10 days before arrival, and other vaccines (such as seasonal ones) may be requested. Umrah visa rules, permit steps and health requirements change season to season. Always verify the current fees and regulations with an approved agent or the official Nusuk platform before you travel - do not rely on last year's information.
Ihram Clothing & Essentials
The Ihram garments are the heart of your packing list. Getting this category right keeps your pilgrimage smooth and your state of Ihram valid.
For Men
- At least 2 sets of Ihram garments (two unstitched white sheets per set) - one to wear, one as a clean backup
- A dedicated Ihram belt with a pouch to hold your phone, money and documents securely
- Unstitched sandals or flip-flops that leave the middle of the foot exposed
- A small clip or safety-free method to keep the garment secure while walking
For Women
- Loose, modest clothing in comfortable, breathable fabric (there is no fixed colour for women's Ihram)
- Several headscarves that stay in place during long prayers and Tawaf
- Comfortable, closed, easy-to-remove footwear for the marble courtyards
- A spare abaya or outfit in case of spills or heat
Groom before Ihram
Trim your nails, and tidy your hair before entering the state of Ihram - cutting hair and clipping nails are not permitted once you are in Ihram. Doing this at your UAE home or hotel before departure saves hassle later.
Unscented Toiletries - The Most Common Mistake
This is the single item first-timers get wrong most often: scented products are not allowed while in Ihram. Standard perfumed soap, shampoo and deodorant all count. Buy an unscented travel kit before you leave the UAE - it is far easier than searching for it at the last minute.

- Unscented (fragrance-free) deodorant
- Unscented lip balm and moisturiser (the dry climate is harsh on skin)
- Toothbrush, unscented toothpaste and a miswak
- Wet wipes and tissues for on-the-go freshening
- Sunscreen (check it is fragrance-free) and a small towel
Health, Comfort & Practical Items
Umrah is physically demanding - long walks, big crowds and, outside winter, real heat. A little preparation prevents the small illnesses that can spoil a trip.
- Your regular prescription medicines (in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription)
- A compact first-aid kit: pain relief, plasters, ORS rehydration sachets, anti-blister patches
- A refillable water bottle for Zamzam water and staying hydrated
- A power bank, charger and a universal adapter (Saudi uses UK-style Type G sockets)
- Sunglasses, a light umbrella for shade, and a foldable prayer mat
- A small drawstring bag for your shoes at the Haram entrances
