Fujairah Day Trip from Dubai: East Coast Beaches, Mountains & Snorkelling
By Big Bird Travel Team
Swap the city skyline for the Gulf of Oman. This guide to a Fujairah day trip from Dubai covers the scenic mountain drive, the UAE's oldest mosque, quiet east coast beaches and the best spots to snorkel - plus how to plan it as a stress-free guided tour.
Most visitors to the UAE never leave the western side of the country - the glass towers of Dubai, the beaches of Abu Dhabi, the dunes of the desert. Yet just a couple of hours east, across the rugged Hajar Mountains, lies a completely different UAE: Fujairah, the only emirate with its entire coastline on the Gulf of Oman. Here the pace slows, the water is clearer and calmer than the Arabian Gulf, old fishing villages dot the shore and the UAE's oldest mosque still stands against a backdrop of bare brown peaks. A Fujairah day trip from Dubai is one of the easiest and most rewarding escapes you can make, and this guide walks you through exactly how to do it.
No visa, no flights
Fujairah is part of the UAE, so there is no border, no visa and no flight involved. If you are already in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi - as a resident or on a visit visa - you can simply set off by road for the day. Keep your Emirates ID or passport with you as usual.
Fujairah Day Trip at a Glance
| Detail | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Distance from Dubai | Around 130 km to Fujairah city |
| Drive time (one way) | Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Best season | October to April (cooler, ideal for beaches) |
| Visa needed | None - it is within the UAE |
| Ideal for | Beaches, mountains, culture, snorkelling, families |
| Suggested time | Full day; leave early, return by evening |
Because everything is within the UAE, a Fujairah day trip is far simpler to plan than an overseas getaway. The main decision is how you travel - self-drive or guided tour - and which mix of coast, culture and mountains you want to fit into the day.
Why Visit Fujairah?
Fujairah offers scenery you simply will not find in Dubai. The drive alone, winding through the Hajar Mountains, is worth the trip. Add calm, clear waters that are far better for swimming and snorkelling than the busy Dubai coast, a slice of genuine Emirati heritage, and a relaxed, uncrowded feel, and you have an ideal contrast to the big-city pace.
- The most scenic mountain drive accessible from Dubai in under two hours
- Clear, calm Gulf of Oman water - excellent for swimming and snorkelling
- The UAE's oldest mosque and some of its oldest forts and watchtowers
- Quiet beaches and resort day-passes away from the Dubai crowds
- A genuine change of landscape and pace for families and couples alike
Top Things to See and Do in Fujairah
Al Bidya Mosque
The Al Bidya Mosque (also spelled Al Bidyah) is widely regarded as the UAE's oldest known mosque, believed to date to around the 15th century. Built from mud brick and stone with four distinctive domes supported by a single central pillar, it is small, humble and quietly moving. It remains an active place of worship, so dress modestly and check whether non-worshippers may enter at the time of your visit; the surrounding watchtowers on the hillside give a lovely view over the coast.
Snoopy Island & Al Aqah Beach
The stretch of coast around Al Aqah, in the north of Fujairah near Dibba, is the emirate's snorkelling heart. Just offshore sits a rocky outcrop nicknamed "Snoopy Island" for its resemblance to the cartoon dog lying down. The shallow reef around it teems with colourful fish and, at times, sea turtles and small reef sharks, making it one of the best shore-snorkelling spots in the country. Several beach resorts here sell day passes that include beach access, loungers and watersports.
Fujairah Fort & Heritage Village
Fujairah Fort is one of the oldest and most important fortifications in the UAE, its mud-brick towers rising above a restored heritage village of traditional houses and a small museum. It is a compact, photogenic stop that puts the emirate's history into context before you head to the coast.
Masafi Friday Market
Despite the name, the Masafi Market - on the mountain road between Dubai and the east coast - is open every day. It is the classic pit stop for carpets, pottery, local honey, fresh fruit and souvenirs, and a natural place to stretch your legs roughly halfway through the drive.
Dibba, Wadi Wurayah & border crossings
The dhow cruises marketed from Dibba often sail into Musandam, which is part of Oman and requires a border crossing and passport - that is a separate trip, not a simple Fujairah day out. Likewise, access to Wadi Wurayah National Park and some wadis is restricted or seasonal for conservation and safety. Always confirm current access, routes and any permit requirements before you set out.
Getting There: Routes from Dubai
The usual route from Dubai heads out on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and the E611, then follows the E88 through Masafi, where the road climbs into the Hajar Mountains before dropping down to the east coast. It is a well-paved, straightforward drive of around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and your exact start point.
- 1.Leave Dubai early - aim to be on the road by 8am to make the most of the day.
- 2.Drive out via the E611 and join the E88 towards Masafi.
- 3.Pause at the Masafi Market to browse and refuel before the mountain section.
- 4.Continue over the mountains and descend to the Gulf of Oman coast.
- 5.Spend the middle of the day at the beach, a resort day-pass or a snorkelling spot.
- 6.Visit Al Bidya Mosque and a fort or heritage site in the afternoon.
- 7.Head back to Dubai before dark to avoid driving the mountain road at night.
Make it a guided tour
Driving the mountain road yourself is fine in daylight, but a guided east coast tour takes the planning and navigation off your hands - air-conditioned door-to-door transfers, a driver who knows the best stops, and time at the beach and the heritage sites without worrying about parking or routes. It is especially worth it for families, first-timers and larger groups.
Self-Drive vs Guided Tour
| Factor | Self-Drive | Guided Tour |
|---|---|---|
| Flexibility | High - go at your own pace | Set itinerary, key stops covered |
| Effort | You plan, drive and navigate | Door-to-door, nothing to organise |
| Best for | Confident drivers, small groups | Families, first-timers, groups |
| Mountain road at night | Your responsibility | Handled by an experienced driver |
| Cost | Fuel, tolls, entry fees, car | One per-person price, usually all-in |
There is no single right answer - it depends on how much you enjoy driving and planning. Many visitors prefer a guided tour precisely because it turns a long logistical day into a relaxed one, and the per-person price often compares well once you add up fuel, a day-pass and your time.
What to Pack for a Fujairah Day Trip
- Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes for the beach
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
- Your own snorkel and mask if you have them (rentals are available too)
- Modest clothing to cover shoulders and knees for the mosque and heritage sites
- Water, snacks and some cash for the market and smaller stops
- Emirates ID or passport, and a fully charged phone for navigation
